Health & wellness.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Beth Cox

Music has been a joyful part of Beth Cox’s life all of her life. Born Ida Elizabeth Walter, “Beth” was born into a family of entertainers, who have played music for generations. Spreading the delight that music has given her and her family to more events and more people throughout Hidalgo County is a passion that fuels the development of a new initiative, designed to connect people to the history and culture of southwest New Mexico through music.

Beth plays the fiddle and just about any other string instrument. She doesn’t read music but learns songs by listening or watching others play. She writes songs and has entertained all around the US and overseas, primarily sharing the energy of old time country music. For the past five years, Beth has led the annual Eastern Arizona Old Time Fiddler’s Association Contest in Safford, Arizona, a role she inherited from her mother, whom she helped to lead it many of the years since the association was formed in 1979. It is an event she dreams about expanding into Hidalgo County.

Beth and her family work cattle and grow hay on their homestead ranch in the western part of the County. In addition to being the President of SPRIT of Hidalgo, she works full-time for a partner agency of the Hidalgo County Food Coalition and has done a lot of the development work in the Garden herself and with volunteers. She also supervises five food distributions every month to get emergency and supplemental food to hungry families and has incorporated excess food from the Garden into those distributions.

Bringing music to the Garden and sharing the connection of music to history and culture with the people of Hidalgo County is an initiative that Beth is very excited about. She is committed to working with community partners, devoted volunteers, and fellow musicians on the development of an entertainment area at the Garden and a partnership of musicians who share her love for music and for New Mexico.

It has been such a long time since we have reached out to our partners at the Hidalgo County Food Coalition (HCFC) to talk about things other than food security. We do have to start by saying how sorry we are about any of the hardships that the pandemic has imposed upon you and yours. It has been and continues to be a devastating loss of human life and to our standard of living. Now more than ever, it is important to work together to find the resources to recover, rebuild, and support ourselves, our families, and the communities within Hidalgo County.

On Friday, November 13th at 10 am, SPIRIT and the HCFC will be hosting a Town Hall to discuss the challenges and specific needs to be addressed through the next 6 months and beyond. SPIRIT of Hidalgo has been working with Roadrunner Food Bank to distribute increasingly larger loads of food that have been sent every month to help families through the COVID crisis. SPIRIT is happy to be sharing some of the other basic human needs resources that have recently become available through FEMA.

SPIRIT will also be introducing the new Explore Hidalgo initiative. This project has already received much support and some funding to increase interesting, safe, and accessible trails and other outdoor venues for locals and visitors, as well as developing and transitioning products and services offered by small businesses to cater to people who are utilizing outdoor activities in Hidalgo County. In a world that may find survival and thrival in being outdoors, this initiative is timely and appropriate, as well as potentially being an avenue for recovery and rebuilding capitalizing on the wide-open spaces of southwest New Mexico.

We will be meeting in person at the Chamber of Commerce at 206 Main St in Lordsburg or you can join us on the conference call, using the following information: Phone # 720-740-9600 Access Code # 7207124. We look forward to "seeing" you there!
